The word sin is a difficult word, at it's very mention, it conjures up mental pictures of a parent who is forever reprimanding a child and a child who as a result suffers condemnation. The child is not allowed to do what they want to do, but must conform to what someone else wants them to do. Since the beginning of time, mankind has felt like there was a sword of Damocles hanging over them (a situation, in which something very bad could happen to them at any time, source Collins Dictionary), with regard to sin. Many people believe that they do not sin, they believe that they are good people, but would admit that there are people who are not good people and they are the ones that could sin.

What is sin?

The Greek word hamartia (?�ʃ��σ�?��) is usually translated as sin in the New Testament. In Classical Greek, it means "to miss the mark" or "to miss the target" which was also used in Old English archery.

This is a very different concept to 'doing something bad, or doing something wrong'

We all sin. It�fs a fact and part of human nature. Our world is fallen and corrupt because of sin. It is impossible to never sin, if anyone says that they�fve never committed any iniquity, they are not being truthfull.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man (Adam), and death through sin, so death spread to all people [no one being able to stop it or escape its power], because they all sinned. Romans 5:1

To commit sin, is part of mankind's nature without the Holy Spirit, but it perhaps seems unfair that mankind is saddled with a sin nature, when the original sin of Adam was not our fault. When Adam sinned, sin spread to all, but in essence we all sin, without any reference to Adam. When we speak of the sin nature, we refer to the fact that we have a natural inclination to sin; given the choice to do God�fs will or our own, we will naturally choose to do our own thing.

Proof of the sin nature abounds. If anyone has any doubt that we are born with natural sin, 'just put two five year olds in a bathtub with one rubber ducky and watch it appear without any teaching'. No one has to teach a child to lie or be selfish.

What is God's thinking on sin?

If we go back to the original definition of sin, 'to miss the mark', sin is 'missing the mark in God', when we miss the mark, we miss God's best for us, God has a plan for our lives, it is a plan for good, to bring us in to a life of abundance and blessing.

For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,�f says the Lord, �eplans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. John 10:10

Here in John 10:10, we see two contrasting thoughts of God, the thief comes to destroy, I have come for you to have life and life in abundance, flowing over

Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use [when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.�h Luke 6:38

God's intention for us is to open the windows of heaven and pour down blessing on us, until it is running over, because there is no room left for more. But if we look at the second part of Luke 6 'what measure you use, it will be the measure that is returned to you. This is a principle in God, that whatsoever you sow, good or bad, will return back to you

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked [He will not allow Himself to be ridiculed, nor treated with contempt nor allow His precepts to be scornfully set aside]; for whatever a man sows, this and this only is what he will reap. Galatians 6:7

For the one who sows to his flesh [his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses] will reap from the flesh ruin and destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Galatians 6:8

This is God's intent and desire , that we will sow to the Spirit and reap eternal life. But there is an enemy (the thief, and/or our natural thinking) that is obsessed with causing us to sow to the flesh, why is this?

about judgment [the certainty of it], because the ruler of this world (Satan) has been judged and condemned. John 16:11

This happened at the beginning, when satan deceived Adam, God judged hIm (satan), God did not judge Adam and Eve, he sent them from the garden to protecet them, for if they had taken from the tree of life in a fallen state, a state where they had disbelieved God, they would have lived forever in that fallen state, with no means of obtaining eternal life in God.

Now satan carries the judgment of God, which will see him eventually cast into the lake of fire, in Hell, totally absent from God. John 16:11 Satan's total intent is to bring you in to his judgment and eternal damnation. God's intent is to bring you into eternal life in Christ.

This is why God does not want us to 'miss the mark', it is not because He is a despot who wants to dictate to us and spoil our fun, it is because He has given us free wiill.

I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore, you shall choose lifein order that you may live, you and your descendants, Deuteronomy 3:19

He gave satan free will, satan was created as an archangel and was created perfect in God, but with choice, satan chose himself, rather than God.

How have you fallen from heaven, O [a]light-bringer and daystar, son of the morning! And you said in your heart, I will ascend to heaven; I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will sit upon the mount of assembly in the uttermost north. Isaiah 14:12-13.

So God created humans good and without a sinful nature and he created Lucifer (who became satan), good and perfect, 'God created man in His own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them' (Genesis 1:27). However, Genesis 3 records the choice of Adam and Eve. By that one action, it was missing the mark in God, what was the mark missed it was unbelief. Unbelief in God entered into their nature. They were immediately stricken with a sense of shame and unfitness, and they hid from God�fs presence (Genesis 3:8). When they had children, Adam�fs image and likeness was passed along to his offspring (Genesis 5:3). The sin nature manifested itself early in the genealogy: the very first child born to Adam and Eve, Cain, became the very first murderer (Genesis 4:8).

It is through Christ that we are born again. �gThat which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit�h (John 3:6). When we are born of Adam, we inherit his sin nature; but when we are born again in Christ, we inherit a new nature: �gTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!�h (2 Corinthians 5:17).

We don�ft lose our sin nature once we receive Christ. The Bible says that sin remains in us and that a struggle with that old nature will continue as long as we are in this world. Paul bemoaned his own personal struggle in Romans 7:15–25. But we have help in the battle—divine help. The Spirit of God takes up residence in each believer and supplies the power we need to overcome the pull of the sin nature within us. �gNo one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God�fs seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God�h (1 John 3:9). God�fs ultimate plan for us is total sanctification when we see Christ (1 Thessalonians 3:13; 1 John 3:2).

Through His finished work on the cross, Jesus satisfied God�fs wrath against sin and provided believers with victory over their sin nature: �g�eHe himself bore our sins�f in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness�h (1 Peter 2:24). In His resurrection, Jesus offers life to everyone bound by corrupt flesh. Those who are born again now have this command: �gCount yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus�h (Romans 6:11).

To be 'born again'

There was man called Nicodemus in John 3:1, Nicodemus said that he knew for a fact that Jesus was a teacher and that God was with Him. Jesus gave an unusual answer to him. Jesus said 'You must be 'born again' John 3:3, so that you can receive spiritual things. Nicodemus answered Him and said 'How can I be 'born again' Joh n 3:4. I cannot come into this world again from my mother?" Jesus said to him, "when you were born first, you were born into this natural

world, but there comes an opportunity to be 'born again spiritually', to be able to receive spiritual things", John 3:12 to which Nicodemus said, "how is that possible?"

Then Jesus said, you are a great teacher of Israel and you do not know if this is possible? If you cannot believe earthly, natural things John 3:12, that I tell you, such as a person born initially through his mother, how can you believe spiritual things that I tell you about being born again spiritually? John 3:12.

This is a very interesting passage, because for the first time, it gives us the difference between a person that does not believe in God, against a person who does believe in God.

Jesus is the entrance, the link, the door, John 10:7 between mankind and God, for man to be reborn spiritually, that is, receive the Spirit of God in his human spirit to be made alive to God, This is the very reason that Jesus came to earth, 1 john 3:8 to give us the truth. He lived, died on the cross and is resurrected (born again), so that we can receive the Holy Spirit to be 'born anew and able to communicate with God.'

Jesus told Nicodemus you must be 'born again', because if you are not born again, you cannot know the kingdom of heaven John 3:5, you cannot receive from God, spiritual things. How could Nicodemus have been born again, indeed, how can we be 'Born Again'? The Apostle Paul gives us the answer, if you speak with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ has been raised from the dead, you will be born again in your spirit Romans 10:9-10.

From generation to generation, the sin nature was passed down to all of humanity: �gSin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned�h (Romans 5:12). This verse also presents the unsettling truth that the sin nature leads inexorably to death (see also Romans 6:23,and Ephesians 2:1).
